Election Tuesday

This Tuesday is the BIG day! America will line up at the polls to vote for the next President, stickers will be handed out, and the campaign smear ads will FINALLY stop! Whatever your feelings on our next President elect, take some comfort in the fact that the Executive branch is just one arm of our government. There are seasons that I am very grateful for our system of checks and balances.

Voter turnout in America is always low. Some believe their vote doesn’t matter, especially if they want to vote third party. This is not true! Everyone’s vote makes a difference in one way or another. For the big candidates, votes determine how the electoral college casts their vote. For the smaller ones, if they reach five percent of the votes, they are eligible to receive funding for the next election, which means more people will hear of that party and its platform.

As I always say, if you don’t vote, you don’t have the right to complain about where our country ends up! Even if you aren’t sure your presidential vote will matter, the ballot is full of other issues that need attention. There are always tax requests, other offices to vote for, and controversial issues to have a say in. If you want to vote but don’t know how you will get there, ask about local options for help getting to the polls. DOROT is a great resource. Every area has volunteers that would love to help you get to the polls! You can also ask a friend or relative if you can catch a ride. Find out more about DOROT at: http://www.programsforelderly.com/cool-escorts-to-voting.php.

Read up on the candidates and the issues, and then get out and exercise your right to vote! It’s an exciting time in our country, and I can’t wait to see the results!
